Just a thought:
If Ukraine is adamant about joining the NATO, why not approve both Ukraine and Russia to become members?
The Russians have already expressed an interest in joining the NATO as far back as 2000. They were obviously worried about China at that time until President Clinton told Putin no. By saying no to Russia, we have effectively pushed them closer to China 25 years ago.
Then, NATO violated its promise not to expand eastward.
Russia did not object to its expansion too much until Ukraine's membership in NATO became an issue for them in the wake of the Crimea crisis, all the while when their interest was ignored to become a member.
Russia is fundamentally a European country closer to the Western world, culturally and religiously.
So, if we consider NATO membership for Russia, we could still stop pushing the Russians to form a military alliance with the Chinese in the future.
If Russia can become a NATO member, then it will have no reason to object to Ukraine's membership.
It will be a good opportunity to push Russia to become more open and a liberal democracy with freedom of expression, free enterprise, free press...etc as conditions for their membership. (Remember, they already know that they tried and failed in the misguided ideas of communism)
The West wouldn't have to fight two adversaries - Russia and China at the same time.
By bringing Russia into the Western military alliance, we will have thousands of miles of border with China to keep a close eye on them.
It's a win-win for us.
Just my two cents!

Minerals agreement with Zelensky would pave the way for more military and financial aid from the United States so that he could continue fighting the war. Z's idea is to get the US to commit to a security guarantee, which would inevitably drag the US into an unnecessary, prolonged proxy war with Russia. Once President Trump sensed what Z was trying to do, he invited the press into the Oval Office, walked Z into a trap, and stopped the signing of the agreement. That is the best thing to do under the circumstances. Trump wants to sign the agreement, but he also wants to end the war, which Z was not ready to commit. Like President Trump said, Z is not ready for peace yet.
Now, Zelensky will be under tremendous pressure in the coming weeks, and then he will be ready to agree to end the war. If Z doesn't, someone else in Ukraine will replace Z. President Trump has all the time in the world. He wouldn't rush the United States into a bad agreement that would drag us into a mess. It's a brilliant strategy. The way it unfolded may seem like a bad thing for someone seeing such background negotiations on TV for the first time. However, such exchanges are common in negotiations. The only difference is that it usually happens behind closed doors and not on live TV. (Pic. Credit NY Times).
