Just a thought:
If Ukraine is adamant about joining the NATO, why not approve both Ukraine and Russia to become members?
The Russians have already expressed an interest in joining the NATO as far back as 2000. They were obviously worried about China at that time until President Clinton told Putin no. By saying no to Russia, we have effectively pushed them closer to China 25 years ago.
Then, NATO violated its promise not to expand eastward.
Russia did not object to its expansion too much until Ukraine's membership in NATO became an issue for them in the wake of the Crimea crisis, all the while when their interest was ignored to become a member.
Russia is fundamentally a European country closer to the Western world, culturally and religiously.
So, if we consider NATO membership for Russia, we could still stop pushing the Russians to form a military alliance with the Chinese in the future.
If Russia can become a NATO member, then it will have no reason to object to Ukraine's membership.
It will be a good opportunity to push Russia to become more open and a liberal democracy with freedom of expression, free enterprise, free press...etc as conditions for their membership. (Remember, they already know that they tried and failed in the misguided ideas of communism)
The West wouldn't have to fight two adversaries - Russia and China at the same time.
By bringing Russia into the Western military alliance, we will have thousands of miles of border with China to keep a close eye on them.
It's a win-win for us.
Just my two cents!

Goad way of thinking

Minerals agreement with Zelensky would pave the way for more military and financial aid from the United States so that he could continue fighting the war. Zs idea is to get the US to commit to a security guarantee, which would inevitably drag the US into an unnecessary, prolonged proxy war with Russia. Once President Trump sensed what Z was trying to do, he invited the press into the Oval Office, walked Z into a trap, and stopped the signing of the agreement. That is the best thing to do under the circumstances. Trump wants to sign the agreement, but he also wants to end the war, which Z was not ready to commit. Like President Trump said, Z is not ready for peace yet.

Now, Zelensky will be under tremendous pressure in the coming weeks, and then he will be ready to agree to end the war. If Z doesnt, someone else in Ukraine will replace Z. President Trump has all the time in the world. He wouldnt rush the United States into a bad agreement that would drag us into a mess. Its a brilliant strategy. The way it unfolded may seem like a bad thing for someone seeing such background negotiations on TV for the first time. However, such exchanges are common in negotiations. The only difference is that it usually happens behind closed doors and not on live TV. (Pic. Credit NY Times).

Gordon, The war in Ukraine is not about Russia or Ukraine. My objection to writing a blank check to the Ukrainians is based on 2 important things. 1. When we are 36 trillion dollars in the hole, we should not be thinking about fighting another war unless we are directly attacked. Instead, we should be thinking about fixing our failing infrastructure and our schools. Our veterans are losing their homes, and the suicide rates are rising at an alarming rate while the inflation is out of control. Our cities are becoming desolate. I am not excited about sending another dime of our taxpayers money to take care of someone else's problem at the expense of our own future. During the campaign. I was the only candidate among both republican and democratic candidates who said I would have not only voted against Speaker Johnson's 100 billion dollar aid to Ukraine, I would have put together a group of sensible members from both parties to block that bill. It was not politically the right thing to say at that time, running for the Republican nomination, but I never hesitated to say it publicly. 2. The war is about our broken promises to the world and about Russia. America stood tall on the world stage and promised that we would not move NATO an inch eastward if the Russians allowed the unification of Germany. We have not only broken that promise a dozen times - every time a former Soviet country changed its mind and wanted to join the alliance but we have ended up paying for their defense while they get to spend their money on all socialist programs and on their Black Sea resort vacations. Now, please tell me, do you still want to keep writing blank checks to Zelenskyy so he can continue this endless war partly provoked by the treatment of ethnic Russians in Crimea by Ukraine? Always please remember Zelenskyy is not a saint either. He has plenty of skeletons in his closet, too. We shouldn't allow our partisan urges to cloud our reasoning. On another note, Russians are not our enemies. Let me please qualify that with a few valid reasons. A. During the Clinton Administration, the Russians even asked for a possibility of joining NATO because the real enemy is China - a real superpower we helped create with our dollars, out of our stupid foreign policies of the 70s and 80s. We took a third-world country that was struggling to feed its people in the 60s and 70s and made it into a superpower that challenges us everywhere today. We gave them the rocket technology and gave the money to build them to target our cities. B. At the end of the day, Russians are part of the Western civilization and historically an integral part of the Christendom. Except for their brief, misguided 70-year experiment with communism - which is now dead and gone- Russians have more in common with us than the Saudis, the Indians, or the Chinese. The Russian orthodox church was founded by those who survived the Ottoman take over of Constantinople - the very mother church of the Holy Roman Eastern Empire. Those who managed to flee ended up in St. Petersburg, where they founded the Orthodox Church. They aspire to be our partners. It 8s time we reevaluate our priorities. C. Western Europe would freeze to death except for the Russian oil and gas, which they have not used as a weapon against the very people wanting to continue this fight for the last 3 winters. That, I think, is a mature approach. Now, please tell me, should we go ahead and arm the Ukrainians to help nuke the Russians? There comes a time in every century or so when we have to recalibrate our compass and policies based on global political transformations. If we don't recognize it and change our outlook accordingly, we will become the Rhinos and irrelevant. I am glad this Administration recognizes it. That is why I think what President Trump is doing is better than the failed policies of the past 3 years. Thank you

what a lot of bollocks

Trump owes Zelensky AND America one. When did the GOP become little more than putin appeasing RINOs. Nothing Republican or Reagan-like in that Celebrity Fan Cult.

Well, it is now evident that Z wanted the minerals agreement, which would pave the way for him to receive more military and financial aid from the United States so that he could continue fighting the war. So you are saying that it was a good idea to appear divided and an appeased to your enemies and to bully a nation already under attack from a dictator that throws his own people from tall buildings?

Zelenski shot himself in the head today at the Oval Office. He is arrogant, he is angry, he has an inferiority complex, he doesnt know how to be a leader. That much anger shown through his body language is toxic. By the way, he needs to be properly dressed when attending meetings. There are restaurants in Washington that wont serve you if you are not dressed in a suit. This guy shows up in meetings in T shirts saying he doesnt have time to wear a suit. Is it ok if someone showed up at your business meeting in a pajamas saying he didnt have time to change?

Give me a break. That meeting was a total set up. Even Sen. Lindsey Graham said afterwards that he had cautioned Z to "not take the bait". These clowns have effectively cut our ties with all our European allies to appease the dictator of a third rate country. Russia has a smaller economy than Canada. What do they have that we need. Next step will be China taking aggressive action against Taiwan. Trump is a puppet of Steven Miller and his racist associates.

Not all true The meeting seem to be designed to purposely chastise him

Musk dressed the same ffs šŸ˜…

Z is not wearing suit, he wears Ukraine in his hart and on his hart, but americans do not understand

Bullshit, Trump and Vans appeared like Putin's puppets....
